Mission - Research at the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (SKD)
Research at the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (SKD) develops a transdisciplinary research concept for the museum network. It is the point of contact for the collections on conceptual, ethical and methodological issues and is committed to the principles of good scientific practice. Its areas of work include provenance research, the natural sciences, the Transcultural Academy, the art library and editing the Online Collection. There is also a particular focus on contemporary methods of curatorial and artistic research in dialogue with art historical expertise, which is reflected, for example, in the strategic collaboration with the Archiv der Avant-Garden - Egidio Marzona.
The department develops and realises cross-collection research projects, often as part of international collaborations, in line with the SKD's strategic objectives. The aim here is to further develop exhibition practice as research practice in co-operation with the collections, also with the aim of making research as a process accessible and transparent to the public. SKD's research supports and establishes the organisation of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden as an active, forward-looking and democratic place in an age of demographic change. In line with the educational mission of the museum as a public institution, it contributes to the proactive connection of the collections with social discourses.
The research department communicates externally, for example to universities, art academies, scientific research centres as well as non-university institutions, independent initiatives and many international partners. In cooperation with the Saxon State and University Library Dresden (SLUB), research is working on establishing a transdisciplinary open access platform.
