„Correggio. Movingly Human“ – SKD launch advance ticket sales for a 2026 exhibition highlight
29 May 2026Die Werke von Antonio
The works of Antonio Allegri, called Correggio, are fascinating testimonies to the Italian Renaissance. From 19 September 2026 to 10 January 2027, the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister (Old Masters Picture Gallery) of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (Dresden State Art Collections, SKD), will be presenting the first extensive exhibition of the painter’s works outside of Italy.
Advance ticket sales start now. Tickets are allocated to specific time slots and can be booked through the SKD Online Shop or purchased at all SKD ticket offices and advance booking points. Visitors can choose between a ticket for the special exhibition only and a combined ticket for both the special and permanent exhibitions.
Through his atmospheric use of light, his joyous and lively figures and his novel reinterpretations of both religious and erotic pictorial subjects, Correggio (1489–1534) became one of the most influential painters in art history. Alongside Leonardo, Michelangelo and Raphael, he is considered one of the most important artists of the Renaissance. Today, however, Correggio does not enjoy the same recognition as his famous contemporaries.
With some 60 extant paintings, the artist’s oeuvre is relatively small. Only five of his panel paintings are found in Germany, four of them owned by the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister – and they are the largest in his oeuvre: Holy Night, Madonna of Saint Francis, Madonna of Saint Sebastian and Madonna of Saint George. Together, they comprise the largest collection of altar panel paintings by Correggio worldwide.
The exhibition at the Zwinger will present these singular holdings side by side with outstanding international loans from museums such as the Louvre in Paris, the Prado in Madrid and the Uffizi in Florence. One hundred works will be on display, including paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures and decorative art objects. Major works by Correggio will be shown alongside paintings by artists from his circle and from subsequent generations. Another highlight – and the reason for the exhibition – is the first-ever display of the Madonna of Saint Sebastian following its restoration and technical analysis.
Correggio’s unique ability to depict emotion shines brightly in this presentation. Like no one before him, he succeeded in making the divine appear approachable – be it in the form of saints or ancient goddesses. His figures stand out for their poses, which are as elegant as they are daring, as well as for their exuberance and the very lifelike depiction of their hair and skin. Still today, this is what makes Correggio’s paintings one thing above all else: movingly human.
