Online Symposium: „Museums and Universities of Diversity: How can Museums and Art Universities Take an Active Approach to Living and Learning Diversity?

13 November 2020

[Translate to English:] Symposium

The Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (SKD) together with the Dresden University of Fine Arts (HfBK) are hosting a digital symposium from the 26 to the 27 November 2020, addressing the topic “Museums and Universities of Diversity: How can Museums and Art Universities Take an Active Approach to Living and Learning Diversity?” Throughout this two-day conference, participative and democratic processes as well as transcultural mediation formats in museums and art universities will be on the agenda.

User-generated content on the Internet account for a large proportion of the flood of information many people are exposed to everyday. By communicating and educating about history and art, museums and art universities carry a heavy responsibility, as they significantly contribute to the transfer of information and thus societal canon of knowledge.

In our globally interconnected world, what kind of knowledge do art universities and museums communicate; what kinds of methods do they use? What can and must institutions learn, how can they challenge their own standards? Experts from the fields of neuroscience, art, art education, and architecture will use lectures, rounds of talk, and practical examples to discuss how learning processes in museums and art schools can be organised in a more diverse way. Based on the thesis stating that activating different areas in the brain increases the probability of humans storing information more sustainably, haptic and participative experiences are considered an important part of educational work. The panel “Learning” will start off with various methods of mediation and education concepts. On the second day, concepts for dealing with space and materials will be examined as a way to make learning processes more innovative.

Those who are interested can sign up until 19. November 2020 via outreach@skd.museum. Participants also receive an information package upon request.

The symposium is funded by the Federal Government Commissioners for Culture and the Media (BKM). The event will be available both in German and English. The conference takes place after the meeting “Handmade Tales” of the HfBK, which will be in session on 24. and 25. November 2020 and organised by the EU pilot project “EU4ART”.
