Warlukurlangu Artists: Contemporary Art by Australia's Aborigines

An exhibition by GRASSI Museum für Völkerkunde zu Leipzig
October 6 to 31, 2010

The GRASSI Museum für Völkerkunde zu Leipzig (GRASSI Ethnographical Museum in Leipzig) presents contemporary art by Australia's Aborigines. The gallery ARTKELCH will be guest at the museum, showing a hand-picked selection of recent works of the indigenous art centre “Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation“. This exhibition is part of the series “Pro Community” and is under the auspices of the Australian Embassy.

“Warlukurlangu Artists“ is one of the largest art centres in the Central Australian desert, whose works have a distinctive style of bright colours and traditional iconography. Aboriginal art not only is the craft with the word's longest tradition, but it has also become an exciting art movement within the past 40 years, whose value no longer remains a secret among collectors. The selection of works was made in close cooperation with “Warlukurlangu Artists“. Many of the artists exhibited are represented in major Australian as well as in some international public museums and and private collections. This exhibition is the first united show of its kind of works by the Warlukurlangu Artists in Germany.

The projects aims at presenting the range of Aboriginal art and wants to inform about “Ethical Sourcing” of indigenous Australian art with its focus on art centres that are owned by the artists themselves. The travelling exhibition – after stops in Stuttgart and Hamburg – is now on view in Leipzig before it will travel to the gallery's head quarter in Freiburg.

Among the artists represented are Alma Nungarrayi Granites, Paddy Japaljarri Sims, Judy Napangardi Watson, Otto Jungarrayi Sims, Liddy Napanangka Walker, Paddy Japanangka Lewis, Andrea Nungarrayi Martin, Mary Anne Nampitjinpa Michaels, Shorty Jangala Robertson, Alice Henwood Nampijinpa Michaels, Ruth Napaljarri Stewart, Mary Napangardi Brown, Margaret Napangardi Turner, Kelly Napanangka Michaels, Mickey Jampijinpa Singleton.
