PRO COMMUNITY - WESTERN APY LANDS.

Aboriginal Art from Ninuku Arts, Tjungu Palya and Tjala Arts

An Exhibition of the GRASSI Museum für Völkerkunde zu Leipzig (GRASSI Ethnographical Museum in Leipzig)
16 September to 30 October, 2011

With an exclusive selection of current works from the western APY lands, the gallery ARTKELCH is guest in the exhibition series “Pro Community”. This exhibition is under the patronage of the Australian Embassy.

The projects aims at presenting the variety of Aboriginal art to a wide art-interested audience. Contemporary art from the art centres Tjala Arts, Tjungu Palya and Ninuku Arts in the north-western part of southern Australia will be on view. The art works from the young art centres “far off the marketplace” are characterized by originality and vitality. Although the art centres were only founded a few years ago, the indigenous artists have already been nominated for several art awards. This travelling exhibition was shown in Stuttgart, Freiburg and Cologne before its presentation in Leipzig.

The exhibition reflects the deep rootedness that joins the people of the western APY lands to a whole. They tell stories past, dreamings and the truth about their culture. Seen individually, the paintings are lively and expressive works, but observed in connection with their stories and people, they are an unique experience. They mirror the bond between land, culture, community and people.
