The Sistine Madonna is special, because …

• … she connects earthen and heavenly spheres evidently. The balustrade at the bottom edge and the green curtains belong to this world, the holy sphere is implied by the uncountable heads of angels.

• … every observer sees how she carries the Jesus child from the broad expenses of the heaven to the earth like in a vision of Mary.

• … it is unusual how serious Mary and Jesus are looking. In their faces, the knowledge of the coming death on the cross is mirrored.

• … the two angels at the bottom of the picture do not seem to fit in the solemn earnestness of the subject. Their happy flippancy builds a perfect bridge to the observer. They also carry a liturgical meaning. In each sermon, the host turns into the body of Christ and is return to heaven by the angels.

• … Raphael's sense of space differs from his predecessors. The room develops from the figures and is not design mathematically. The Madonna steps straight and poised in the direction of the viewer. All figures appear lively and impressed.
