Art Library

Excellently printed large-format illustrated volumes or specialist literature ranging in date from classical antiquity to the present day – on the first floor of the Residenzschloss, practically at the heart of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, all these are publicly accessible in the Kunstbibliothek (Art Library). The Kunstbibliothek is the central academic library of the Dresden art collections and constitutes an extremely important “fountain of knowledge” for international research in the city centre. In collaboration with the museums, institutions and research projects of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, it makes Dresden’s former electoral and royal palace, the Residenzschloss, a contemporary “residence of science and art”.

The entire holdings of the library currently comprise approximately 260,000 volumes. The overwhelming majority of items are included in a WebOPAC and are publicly accessible on the internet. The character of the holdings is closely related to the collecting focal points of the museums. Therefore, there is specialist literature on art history which can seldom be found in other libraries. In addition to general literature on the history of art, there is a rich and diverse collection of monographs about artists and exhibition catalogues from all over the world, which form the core of the library’s holdings.

The comprehensive range of literature is supplemented by the provision of specialist databases as well as numerous other services. Since February 2004 readers have been able to benefit from a spacious and modern open-shelf reference area which can be used for studying, researching and browsing. The Kunstbibliothek also regards itself as an educational institution and – as a living repository of knowledge – it cooperates with the Museum Education department in providing school students, and also senior citizens, with training in academic working methods.
