DRESDEN SUMMER – INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY FOR THE ARTS
STUDIES OF THE FINE & DECORATIVE ARTS – STUDIES OF PALACES, MUSEUMS AND THEIR COLLECTIONS
14th – 21st August 2010
The Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (State Art Collections Dresden) preserves one of the oldest and richest collections in the world. Founded as a Kunstkammer in 1560, they developed over the centuries into collections of almost unparalleled magnitude and importance. Ever since its foundation the study of these collections has inspired and enriched scholars, students, collectors and art lovers alike.
To celebrate their 450th anniversary in 2010, the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden has established the DRESDEN SUMMER - INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY FOR THE ARTS. The study course allows participants an exclusive and highly interesting look behind the scenes of the museums belonging to the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, always under the guidance of the institutions’ directors, scholars and curators. These experts will present both masterpieces and virutally unknown works in the storage of the various museums. In case-studies, the latest results of scientific research or the development of grand projects will be shown to and discussed with the participants.
During the intensive and stimulating seven-day course, the participants will explore the city of Dresden, its great monuments and its museums. The main theme is the study of the collections in a context that covers the princely attitudes of the Saxonian rulers during the late Renaissance, the magnificent royal patronage and representation that flowered especially in the 18th century Augustan Age, and the monarchy in 19th century bourgeois society. These collections are presented in the beautiful royal palaces in and around Dresden where their meaning and importance will be studied in the original surroundings. The contemporary, highly active role of the Dresden museums and their collections will welcome the participants everywhere in the vibrant and innovative atmosphere that pervades the cultural life of this city.
